Microchipping

For cats and dogs

A microchip is a tiny chip (the size of a grain of rice), which is implanted under the skin in between the shoulder blades. The microchip contains a unique code which is readable by a scanner and this code is linked to the contact details of your pet registered to a central database.

  • In April 2016 a law came into place that stated that all dogs over the age of eight weeks must be microchipped and registered to an approved database.
  • All breeders are now required to have the puppies microchipped before they are taken to their new homes.
  • New owners are responsible for making sure the contact details for the chip are up to date. This can be checked by contacting either Identibase or Petlog, the central databases responsible for storing your pet’s information.
  • Many pet owners are concerned about the discomfort experienced when placing a microchip. Although the needle used is slightly larger than is used at a vaccination, here at Cherry Tree we use plenty of treats and fuss to distract your pet.
