Dental Health

Your pet’s mouth should be checked at least once a year by a vet to inspect the teeth and gums for early signs of dental disease. Oral hygiene is very important in animals, just as it is in people. Dental problems can be a sign of other health problems and can also cause ill health in other areas of the body

Diagnostics

Cherry Tree Veterinary practice offers a wide range of state of the art diagnostics.

Fleas & Ticks

Fleas are a common insect found in the hair coat of all domestic animals and their presence does not indicate that your pet is dirty – they can be present in the cleanest of pets and homes. If you suspect your pet has fleas, they may be itching, lose fur around the base of the tail, have brown powder in their coat and you may even see small brown insects running over the skin. To prevent your pet from becoming infested with fleas, we recommend regular treatment of all pets in the home with prescription medication available from the practice. Fleas can also become infected with a tapeworm egg so it is important to combine flea and tapeworm control

Lungworm

The lungworm Angiostrongylus Vasorum is a parasite affecting dogs. It is carried by slugs and snails and dogs can become infected by eating them, either deliberately (there’s no accounting for taste!) or accidentally when drinking from puddles, playing with toys that have been left outside, or rummaging through the undergrowth. Slugs and snails thrive in warm, damp conditions so Spring can be a high risk time of year for your dog encountering these garden pests.

Microchipping for Cats and Dogs

A microchip is a tiny chip (the size of a grain of rice), which is implanted under the skin.

Pre operative Instructions for your cat

Your cat has been booked in to come to Cherry Tree Vets for a sedation or anaesthetic. Most pets will stay in for the day and return home the same evening, however if we think it necessary for closer monitoring or extra pain relief we may recommend that your cat stays overnight. We will feed your pet once they wake up so if they have any special dietary requirements please let us know on the day, or bring a meal with you for them.

Travelling with your Pet

With the spring and summer holidays on the horizon it's time to start thinking ahead if you plan to take your pet with you! Dogs and cats can now travel abroad on EU holidays with you as long as they have a valid pet passport.

Vaccinating Your Pet

Vaccinations are given to your pet to prevent certain diseases and illness. These diseases are difficult or impossible to treat and can be fatal. These days we have more opportunity than ever before to make sure our pets lead a healthy life. Vaccinating your pet will prevent and control the spread of several serious diseases, unfortunately many pets are still not vaccinated leading others exposed and vulnerable to infection and serious illness.

Weight Management

Weight management is an important part of your pet’s health care. Obesity in animals is linked to an increased risk of conditions such as osteoarthritis and diabetes mellitus as well as impacting on their ability to exercise and breath.   Conversely pets that seem unable to gain weight can often have an underlying medical condition.

Worms & Worming

There are many different types of worms that your pet can carry and certain worms can cause severe disease and even death. For this reason and to reduce the risk of certain worms spreading from your pet to you, it is important to give worming treatment regularly.
